How to Wash Wool
• Keep your favourite wool garments soft, warm, and in perfect shape with these tips.
What is Wool and Why Does It Need Special Care?
Wool is a natural fibre derived from sheep. It’s thick, breathable, and non-allergenic, but can shrink easily and needs delicate handling. Wool is commonly used in jumpers, scarves, hats, socks, and more.
- Check the fabric care label before anything.
- Hand-washable items: Always use cold water and a mild wool detergent.
- Machine-washable items: Use a wool or hand-wash cycle (below 30°C) and a wool-safe detergent like Lenor. Avoid Eco-Saafon wool fabrics.
- Turn garments inside out before washing.
- Wash less frequently. Spot-clean when possible.
- Dry flat: Roll wool in towels to squeeze water, then reshape and leave flat to dry.
- Iron on wool/medium setting: Use steam and avoid high heat. Spray lightly with water.
- Store in cool, dry places: Lay flat, use cedar chests or mothballs to prevent damage.
- Fill a sink with lukewarm water and add 80ml of hair conditioner.
- Soak the garment for 10 minutes.
- Drain and gently squeeze out water—don’t wring!
- Lay flat between two towels, stretch gently, and pin edges if needed.
- Let dry completely while laying flat.
Wool Care Tips
- Blot small stains with cold water and a clean cloth.
- Use a towel to remove excess water after washing.
- When traveling, loosely fold or roll wool garments in tissue paper.
- Use steam in the bathroom to release wrinkles.
- Dry clean once a season for longevity.
